As Process Controller at Liquin, Mitchell (32) is an integral part of the dynamic world of tank storage and logistics. He has a responsible job: managing and monitoring the logistics at Liquin’s Botlek Terminal. Every day involves new challenges, technical precision and collaboration. This story offers a glimpse into Mitchell’s day, the variation in his work and what drives him in this unique work environment.
Starting the day: From planning to work orders
“Every shift begins with a planning check,” says Mitchell. “We look ahead at the coming eight hours to ensure that everything runs smoothly.” Together with his team, he plans the work orders: from pumping liquid products into tanks to organising loading and unloading operations. This requires coordination with colleagues, both inside and outside the terminal.
As Process Controller, Mitchell has to make sure that the work orders are carried out precisely. He explains: “We make sure that each operator gets a form showing which tank should be connected to which pipe and jetty, so that the product is discharged from the ship into the right tank and vice versa. The operators connect the pipe outside and we keep an eye on the process inside the control room.” As a result, his job involves continuous supervision, from beginning to end, and any deviations are immediately signalled and corrected.
Variety of tasks and collaboration
Mitchell’s work is multi-facetted. As well as drawing up work orders and planning logistics, he plays an important role in monitoring the process.
“I receive constant signals and readings. Sometimes we have to adjust the process manually, like starting or stopping a pump,” he says.
He keeps a close eye on progress together with the Operators working outside. Through regular contact with these colleagues, everyone is on the same page and they can respond quickly to any changes. Mitchell is responsible for ensuring that each step in the process runs as smoothly as possible and that everything is done safely, according to the rules.
Process control involves technical precision
As Process Controller, Mitchell works with modern technology, including systems that provide real-time data about the process. “I set how many litres have to be pumped to a tank and the system gives me direct feedback on progress,” he explains. This precision is essential: errors can have significant consequences, both operational and financial. “Everything has to be right, from millimetre levels in the tank to the exact moment a pump has to be switched off,” he emphasises. This attention to detail demands concentration and discipline.
His experience as an Operator, prior to his promotion to Process Controller, is an enormous help. “If you’ve worked outside, you know exactly what’s going on and how you need to manage things,” says Mitchell. “It really helps me to better understand the challenges and my colleagues’ work.” This enables him to make decisions faster and switch smoothly between indoor and outdoor activities.
Working in shifts
At Liquin, Mitchell works in shifts, which means early mornings, late nights and night shifts.. It’s a rhythm that has its advantages and disadvantages, he says: “The advantage is that you’re sometimes free when other people are working, which can be handy, but that’s also a disadvantage.” By now, Mitchell is accustomed to the shift routine and considers it part of his work.
Working in shifts also reinforces team spirit.
“We work with a fixed team of Operators, Process Controllers and Team Leaders who all have to rely on one another,” he explains. “Everyone has to do their work well because we depend on each other. It requires trust and good cooperation.”
Growth opportunities and a future at Liquin
In a few years, Mitchell has made great strides at Liquin. He began as an Operator and quickly advanced to Process Controller. In addition, he is substitute Shift Leader of his team. “I indicated that I wanted to learn more and develop further. And you really get the chance to do that here,” he says enthusiastically. He feels supported in his development and believes that at Liquin there are a great many opportunities for committed people. As for the future, Mitchell hopes to grow even more within the company and to continue broadening his expertise. “Here they really look at what you’re capable of and what you want to achieve,” he says.
Home away from home
All in all, Mitchell feels completely at home at Liquin. The variety of tasks, the responsibility and the collaboration with colleagues mean he enjoys going to work every day. He describes his role as Process Controller as a unique combination of technical knowledge, precision and cooperation. One important aspect that Mitchell really appreciates is the informal work atmosphere. “Everything here is very informal,” he says with a smile. “It’s great working in a place where everyone feels comfortable.”
The open culture at Liquin, where colleagues listen to each other and there’s little hierarchy, creates a workplace where everyone feels heard and where there’s room to develop.
“You don’t work on your own here, you really work together. And you notice that in everything,” he says.
Safety also plays a big role: everyone takes care of each other and ensures that all activities are performed safely. With his positive attitude, eye for detail and perseverance, Mitchell is a valuable asset at Liquin. Over the years he has developed into a reliable and experienced Process Controller.
